Out! Raleigh 2011
“We envision an inclusive world where LGBTQ+ people are thriving, equal and valued members of society”. The LGBT Center's newest vision statement was manifested in a physical celebration at the inaugural Out! Raleigh Festival in 2011 before it was even written.
The leadership team, which consisted of Mitch Noll, Rusty Sutton, Daire Roebuck and Katherine Willis came together to organize an event that would celebrate the LGBTQ+ community in Raleigh in a family-friendly atmosphere. Most pride events are known for being inclusive and colorful but also highly sexualized. Out! Raleigh stands out as a festival which is safe for the little members of our families to enjoy entertainment that is geared towards them. Another unique aspect of the festival is the participation from faith leaders in the area.
Many of them spoke and gave their support to a community that is often excluded from spiritual and religious sects of society. Five churches participated in that first festival and we were treated to a confirmation of support from Mitchell Gold of Faith in America who encouraged the community to be themselves and spread love and kindness.
That first year’s festival was truly iconic. With performances from artists like Kat Williams, A Tin Djinn, Midtown Dickens and Kendall. The historic day culminated with an epic Dragapalooza finale Featuring Nation Tyre, Sterling Maxwell, Marilyn Merlot, Sierra Leone, Rodessa Roadhard, Mary K. Mart, Eunyce Raye, Winnie Baygo, Clair Krug, and Amaya JustAmaya! After a successful first year, The LGBT Center of Raleigh would make it a new tradition to bring pride, inclusivity and fun to all families in the Raleigh area.
